I recently took a course intended to prepare students for the Math Kangaroo competition for grades 7-8, and while it had its strengths, there were several significant shortcomings that left me disappointed. First and foremost, the interactive lectures, which were meant to enhance understanding of algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics, often felt one-dimensional. The content was delivered in a very traditional lecture format that didn’t engage students as much as I had hoped. There was a lack of hands-on activities or innovative teaching methods that could have made these complex subjects more accessible and enjoyable. Another notable issue was the problem-solving sessions. The format was quite rigid, and often, the problems presented did not correlate well with the level of difficulty one would expect for the Math Kangaroo competition. Many of the challenges felt recycled or too simplistic, which didn’t adequately prepare us for the unique and creative problem-solving required in the actual contest. While the course promised to develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills, the personalized guidance often fell short. Feedback was limited, and instructors could have offered more tailored advice. In a subject as nuanced as mathematics, more individualized attention is crucial for students trying to grasp complex concepts and improve their problem-solving techniques. Additionally, the mock contests were poorly executed. They failed to replicate the pressure and time constraints of the real competition, making it difficult to gauge our true preparedness. The lack of realistic practice in a competitive setting hindered our ability to build both confidence and stamina for the actual event. In summary, despite the course's noble intention to prepare students for Math Kangaroo, it did not deliver on many key aspects essential for effective learning and exam preparation. With improvements in engagement, adaptability of content, and quality of feedback, this course could become a valuable resource. As it stands, however, I found it lacking in the depth and rigor necessary for serious competitors.
